Eduworks Technology Semantic Technology

Semantic Technology

Eduworks semantic engine is part of this new wave of technology enablers, a wave that will change everything from training and education to health care and risk management.

Computers have traditionally been used to crunch numbers, manage data, facilitate transactions and enable communication. Advances in natural language processing (NLP) and pattern recognition enable computers to understand as well as transmit what people are writing. Computer comprehension may not be perfect, but problems such as SPAM detection and email categorization demonstrate that getting the answer right most of the time can be of great value.

How it works

At its core, Eduworks semantic engine is a large collection of algorithms for deconstructing documents and analyzing the meaning of text. Some of these algorithms are very simple and some are very sophisticated. Some apply probabilistic and machine learning techniques and others require pre-configuration with data about a specific domain of application.  Altogether these algorithms can be combined and applied in many ways to automatically sort, classify and determine relationships among documents. They can be applied to automatically extract metadata or to automatically detect the various parts of structured or semi-structured documents such as resumes, RFPs, SOPs, regulations and scholarly articles.

How it is applied

Eduworks creates application-specific components around our semantic engine. We add functionality that manages the data structures relevant to the application and create APIs for embedding the component in products or SaaS solutions. For example, Eduworks competency engine uses semantic technology to match training records to competencies, manages competencies represented in IEEE 1484.20 format, and exposes APIs for ingesting data and reporting on matches. As another example, Metaglance uses the same semantic technology to extract metadata from documents and return it via a JSON web service call. These are examples of technologies that are “powered by Eduworks.”
