Investigating the use of open standards to represent and package learning content.
Eduworks researched the use of open XML standards to represent learning and developed an open source prototype SCORM packaging and publshing tool. Eduworks settled on using Open Document Format - presentation (ODP) as the base standard for encoding pages within learning content. ODP is an OASIS standard used to represent the Open Office equivalent of PowerPoint documents. XML SCORM Studio was built to natively display, edit, package and add SCORM behaviors to content represented in ODP. Courses within XML SCORM Studio were natively stored as SCORM 2004 packages. When published, ODP content was converted to HTML for browser delivery. The XML SCORM Studio project had three significant outcomes. - Research into the inner structure of content objects is informing the choice of content aggregation and representation standards for SCORM 2.0.
- XML SCORM Studio demonstrated to the ADL community that tools could be built that made it possible for non-programmers to develop SCORM 2004 content.
- Work on XML SCORM Studio inspired the development of a commercial version, now called Tenereo. Although the underlying technology and implementation is different, many of the ideas from XML SCORM were carried forward.
XML SCORM Studio is available for download from Source Forge. |
