Fulfilling the eLearning Promise

We expect more of eLearning today than a few years ago.  Learners expect to master what they need to know right when they need to know it.  Developers want to find, update, and repurpose content with ease. Instructional designers want content to be well-designed and focused on competencies and performance outcomes. Subject Matter Experts want to be empowered to create and maintain quality content on their own.

Meeting this challenge requires a new, open eLearning content architecture we call NextGen content.

NextGen Content

NextGen content replaces legacy online courses. These legacy courses achieved the early goal of providing alternatives to classroom learning but tend to be long, linear, and created with proprietary tools. They cannot meet today’s requirements for on-demand chunks of learning focused on specific topics.  Organizations can’t afford to redevelop courseware every time major revisions are required, or every time a proprietary platform expires or is rendered obsolete.  A new approach to content design is required to meet today’s expectations for real-time learning experiences with up-to-date content.

First Generation Content

NextGen Content

Monolithic and linear Modular and adaptive
Static content Dynamic Content
Skilled developers required Community developed and maintained
Content ‘locked’ in format Content tagged, searchable and reusable
Single purpose and context Adaptable to multiple contexts
Hard-wired packaging
 Multiple, separate layers
Proprietary delivery platforms Open standards/interoperability

Next generation content breaks the constraints of first generation content. It is constructed in layers that separate content from presentation, structure, context and instructional design. It is far less costly and time consuming to update and maintain.  It is modular and flexible and can be easily repurposed for use in multiple contexts. It uses standards to avoid interoperability problems and is directly tied to learning objectives and performance outcomes. It is tagged with metadata (down to the page level) so that it can be more easily found and managed in distributed environments. It takes advantage of the capabilities of modern formats and learning management systems to provide higher levels of interactivity and personalized learning paths.
