Standards Strategy for E-learning Print E-mail
SCENARIO: A company developed a platform it used to author and deliver interactive courses. It sold both the platform and the courses. The company wished to ensure that its technology met market expectations with regards to SCORM and AICC standards and wanted the functionality of their authoring and delivery platform evaluated to see if there were other features needed to compete more effectively.

The company's development team was familiar with SCORM and AICC specifications but needed assistance in understanding where they appled, what parts needed to be supported and how content should be broken up into Sharable Content Objects (SCOs). The product management team wanted help in positioning the company's products and in understanding where standards fit in.

SOLUTION: Eduworks reviewed the company's products and market strategy with a team from product management, marketing and engineering. Eduworks then produced a short document explaining the cluster of functionality and interoperability points that made competitive sense and framed SCORM specifications in a way that allowed the engineering team to correctly interpret them. Eduworks made recommendations for prioritizing the incorporation of various parts of standards into future products and for how to realize their type of content as SCOs. Eduworks addressed where technology choices would place the company in the market.

RESULT: Support for SCORM and AICC became a competitive advantage and keystone of the company's marketing program.
